I can apply strategies before, during, and after reading to increase fluency and comprehension.

I can demonstrate comprehension of increasingly challenging texts by asking and answering literal, interpretive, and evaluative questions.

1. Entrance Slip: Discuss the relationships between parents and children in Romeo and Juliet.  How do Romeo and Juliet interact with their parents?  Are they rebellious, in the modern sense?  How do their parents feel about them?

Please answer in one full paragraph.

2. Modern Day Adaptation Collaborative Project.

As a group, rewrite the act you are given in your own modern day words.  Create an abridged script where each of your group members has a part.  Perform your act to the class.

This project is worth 50 points.  You must meet the following requirements to receive all 50 points.

A. Your group must hand in a written script.

B. All group members must have lines–even if it is a narrator’s part.

C. Your script must stay true to the original text.

D. Your group members must perform with enthusiasm.

E. Your group must be organized and efficient.

3. Complete test review guide and go over this as a class.

1. Entrance Slip: Compare/Contrast various scenes from classic film version and modern adaptation film version of Romeo and Juliet.

Video Link to Opening Scene in Romeo and Juliet

This is the unconventional version of the balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet.

Here is a short clip of Romeo and Juliet getting married.  Be mindful that in Shakespeare’s script the ceremony occurs offstage.  There are some major differences in film versions and stage versions of Romeo and Juliet.  For example, Mercutio also dies offstage.  Some of the most dramatic scenes never actually happen onstage in Shakespeare’s day.  It’s an interesting observation and begs the question of why.

The version below is the 1996 film, and it begins after Tybalt has killed Mercutio.  Obviously, in response to this Romeo seeks his revenge on Tybalt.

Here’s the 1996 version.  See if you can pick out some of the major differences from this and the actual script Shakespeare wrote.  Obviously, a gun was not used by Juliet to kill herself, but there are some other elements that were added to create cinematic effect.

2. Complete Cloze Reading Summary as review.

3. Character Sort Activity.
